Kansas Native Competes at U.S. Open

by Denise Hnytka (WICHITA, Kan)

Even in a casual practice, Nick Taylor's moves on the tennis court are quick, even, and precise.

"I'm an extremely competitive person. I could turn eating mashing potatoes into a competition," he joked.

His drive to compete in something, anything, brought him to the court in the first place.

"No contact sports were going to work," he remembered. "I've been in a power chair basically my entire life. Track would be stupid, because driving a power chair around in circles wouldn't make much sense. It came down to tennis or golf.

To this day, Taylor doesn't know what it is that hooked him. It could be as simple as, he's good at it.

"Every day I'm around Nick, it fires me up," said Brad Louderback, Head Men's Tennis Coach at Wichita State. "Who wouldn't want that in a college division one program?"

As an assistant coach of the WSU's men's tennis team, Taylor stays on the sidelines. But if there's one thing to know about him, he doesn't stay there long.
