The Wichita Omnium kicked off with the Latham Road Race. Located at the base of the flint hills, the 30 mile course through the rolling hills proved challenging in the warm sunshine.
The group of racers quickly broke into 2 packs with Brian Mitchell and Drew Wills trading off the lead. they soon dropped the rest of the pack working together until the last turn. Mitchell powered up the steep climb leaving Drew behind to finish 1st in the HC3 class. David Nelson made a great showing with 3rd (using both crank handles in this race) followed by David Swaim 4th, Jan Mattern 5th, Jose Pulido 6th, Mike Wagner 7th, John Tutorino 8th, Dennis Clark 9th, Robert Ackerman DNF.
Easily winning HC2 was Rick Gore, followed by Ken Bestine 2nd.
Taking the early lead in the HC1 class was Tom Kahler who started out in the lead of the pack with James Watson and Wayne Romero trailling. The steep hills of the first leg proved to be an advantage for Watson who quickly caught Kahler on the hills. Kahler stuggling to get his bike into the small chain ring dropped behind and was unable to regain the lead. The HC1 class finished out James Watson 1st, Tom Kahler 2nd, Wayne Romero 3rd.
